Most Stumps Are Somewhere Awkward
Behind a fence. Down the side of a house. In a gated back yard with a patio on one side and the property line on the other. That is where most stumps live, and it is why a lot of quotes come back high or do not come back at all.
The grinder runs on tracks and is narrow, so standard yard gates and side yards are usually not the obstacle people expect. Not sure it will fit? Send a photo of the way in and you will get a straight answer before anybody drives out.
- Ground below grade in passes, so the lawn around it is not torn up
- Grindings raked back and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off

Stump Work First. Land Work After.
Stump grinding and stump removal are most of what we do. The rest is the work that tends to follow on the same ground: clearing what the stumps were in, grading what is left, and putting something on top of it.

DetailsFrom Stump to Clean Ground
Three stages every stump goes through. These photos are from different jobs, shown in the order the work happens.

The stump
A cut face at ground level, roots flaring out, usually somewhere a mower has to go round. Measure across the widest part and send a photo.

The grind
The cutting wheel works the stump down in passes until it is below the ground around it. Screens go up where chips could reach a window or a car.

The clean-up
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for you, or loaded and hauled away. Mats protect the lawn and the drive.

Lines get marked
Public utility lines are located through 811 before grinding near them. 811 does not mark private lines, so point out irrigation, lighting, invisible fence and septic parts.
The grind
The stump is ground in passes to below grade, usually four to eight inches under. Tell us first if you are planting or laying turf and it goes deeper.
Clean ground
Grindings are raked back into the hole and topped, left in a pile for your beds, or hauled off. Any marks on the lawn get raked.

Know What to Ask Before You Call
Plain answers to the questions people ask most: what moves the price, grinding or full removal, how deep it goes and what the yard looks like afterwards.

How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost? What Moves the Price
Stump grinding cost is set mostly by how wide the stump is across the cut face, how many stumps there are, and how easily a machine can reach them. Depth, the kind of wood, roots at the surface, whether the grindings are hauled off, and the distance to your town move it from there, which is why a real number comes from two photos and not from a chart.

Stump Grinding vs Stump Removal: Which One Your Yard Needs
Stump grinding chews the stump down below ground level and leaves the roots in the soil to rot, while stump removal digs the whole root ball out and hauls it away. Grind when lawn, mulch or nothing at all is going on top, and remove when something will be built, dug or planted in that exact spot.

What to Do After Stump Grinding
After stump grinding, deal with the chip pile, fill the hollow with soil a little higher than the lawn, and expect to top it up as it settles. The roots left in the ground rot over several years, and the spot can dip, grow mushrooms or throw up a few shoots while they do.
